Flat toh le liya, ab Vastu ke hisaab se interior kaise karaye?

Vastu Shastra is one of the most searched interior planning topics in India — and in Mumbai, where most of us buy ready flats with fixed layouts, the real question is practical: how do you apply Vastu principles when you cannot move the walls? As designers who work with Mumbai flat layouts every day, here is our honest, room-by-room guide to traditional Vastu guidance — and how to adapt it realistically in an apartment.
One note before we begin: Vastu is a traditional Indian architectural belief system that many families deeply value. We respect that, and we design accordingly for clients who follow it. Where a flat's fixed layout conflicts with a guideline, traditional practice offers simple remedies and adjustments — we cover those too.
Kitchen — The Agni (Fire) Zone

If your kitchen is already elsewhere (common in Mumbai flats): position the hob so you face east while cooking where possible.

Keep the sink (water) and hob (fire) separated or at least not directly adjacent — traditionally these elements are kept apart, and practically it is safer too.

Avoid the kitchen directly facing the main door or sharing a wall with the pooja space or toilet where layout allows.

Master Bedroom — The Stability Zone

Sleep with your head towards the south or east — the most widely followed Vastu sleeping guideline.

Avoid placing the bed directly under a beam; if unavoidable, a false ceiling neatly solves this (and looks better too).

Traditionally, mirrors facing the bed are avoided — position the dressing unit on a side wall, or choose wardrobe shutters without full mirror panels for the wall opposite the bed.

Pooja Space — The North-East (Ishan) Corner

In compact flats, a wall-mounted mandir unit in the north-east zone of the living room works beautifully — a full pooja room is not required.

Traditionally, the pooja space is not placed against a toilet wall or under a staircase, and is kept clutter-free.

Warm, soft lighting (a small profile light or diya-style fixture) makes the mandir a design highlight, not just a corner.

Living Room, Mirrors & Colours

⦁ Living room

north or east zones are traditionally preferred; heavy furniture goes towards the south and west walls, keeping north-east lighter and open.

⦁ Mirrors

traditionally placed on north or east walls. Practically, a well-placed mirror also doubles light in compact Mumbai flats — Vastu and design agree here.

⦁ Colours

traditional guidance favours light, soothing tones — whites, creams, light greens and blues — which perfectly matches 2026's warm-minimal trend of earthy neutrals. Aggressive dark tones in bedrooms are traditionally avoided.

⦁ Main door

keep the entrance bright, clutter-free, and well-maintained — a nameplate and good lighting are both Vastu-recommended and great first impressions.

What If Your Flat "Fails" Vastu? (The Mumbai Reality)

Most Mumbai flats will not match every guideline — layouts are fixed, and that is okay. Traditional practice itself offers adjustments: re-orienting the bed or hob, using the correct zone within a room, adding a mandir unit in the right corner, and keeping zones clean and clutter-free. In our experience, thoughtful adaptation delivers what families actually want from Vastu: a home that feels right. We integrate these preferences into the design stage itself, so nothing feels forced or added later.

Frequently Asked Questions

My kitchen is in the north-east. Should I break it down?

No — structural changes in apartments are rarely practical or permitted. Traditional remedies include orienting the hob so you face east while cooking and keeping the fire and water zones separated. Discuss the layout with your designer at the planning stage.

Which direction should the bed face in a flat?

The most widely followed guideline is head towards the south or east while sleeping. In compact bedrooms, prioritise this over other adjustments — it is usually the easiest to achieve.

Is a wall-mounted mandir okay as per Vastu?

Yes — traditional practice accepts a clean, elevated, clutter-free pooja unit in the north-east zone. In Mumbai flats this is the most practical and widely used solution.

Do you design flats as per Vastu?

Yes. If Vastu matters to your family, tell us at the first meeting — we incorporate directions, zones, and placements into the layout itself, so the home follows the guidance naturally without compromising on design.
